I'd say present the evidence and then tell the teacher what they want to hear. This is actually one reason why I think many historians put contradictions intentionally. They present the evidence, but then go against their evidence in their conclusions because they know they'd be hounded into the mud for going against the mainstream. Because that is how they were taught in school, to lie. They know it, but know what would happen if they don't. So to be as honest as they can be they present the evidence, the truth, but then have to resort to lying to keep their peers happy who believe the lies.
