Comments by "Django" (@django3422) on "Rishi Sunak reneges on HS2 plans and declares ban on smoking in bizarre Tory conference speech" video.
Seems like the conversation shouldn't be about trying to ban smoking but rather about if the tax raised off tobacco sales is being properly used and invested sensibly.

@iamjurell If your kid has gotten lung cancer through smoking then they're already in breach of the law. If your adult offspring got lung cancer through smoking then that's the consequence of a choice they made so I'm sorry but also... freedoms, responsibilities and consequences.

@iamjurell Save a lot on pension payments and NHS care for the elderly though, innit. You factored that into your cost to the NHS? Because people been smoking since always and it ain't what devastated the NHS. Also, your leap from smoking being legal to a completely unregulated market is dumb.

After this long and so much money being spent, to make this kind of announcement really highlights the incompetence and lack of vision this government has. Also, watch them sell that land off to their mates... As for health, Sunak doesn't give a damn or he wouldn't be u-turning on green policies. What does more damage to people's health, individual people not really smoking around you or the tons of pollution created by traffic and industry?

I don't know about that. I think that comes down far more to changes in how consumerism and instant one-click convenience drives our lives, the control social media has over our interactions with each other and failing local services leaving so many areas bleak. What I would say about the smoking ban is how quickly bars began to stink of sweat, toilets and stale spilt beer.

@inbb510 Okay, so also no more coffee. Definitely no more sugar. Basically anything that makes food taste good, it's not healthy so you can't have it. No sitting around idle for prolonged periods, get up and do your government mandated exercises every 45 mins, then you're allowed to nibble on some cauliflower. If you're concerning yourself with the health of everyone, where do you stop? Ultimately you might as well enjoy your one life, you can't take anything with you so there's no point keeping it in mint and the only thing you'll ever truly own and control is your own body. So maybe chill out and let other people enjoy theirs, eh?

@worldsuperstar7162 Could apply that to any health needs. Then you've got the US healthcare system, which is awful.

@bigbinji6145 What do you think socialist means?
1
@psynclair85 You assume people read manifestos before voting.
1
@psynclair85 Yes and no. You can't claim people voted for HS2 simply because it's on the manifesto.

@bigbinji6145 Okay. They don't, by the way. Those buildings stopped being 5 star hotels when all the staff that keep them as such were sent away and migrants shoved in en masse. Now its just a holding center.

I know this smoking "ban" ain't gonna affect me, I just think it's peak performative policy making. Sunak's reneging on green policies that would actually improve air quality in a meaningful way, but goes after smokers because he cares about people's health. Riiight...

@iamjurell It's dishonest because he's framing it as a public health concern. Meanwhile, he's reneging on environmental policies such as cleaner air. It's like standing in the smog of a coal factory and declaring how crisp and fresh the air is now no-one around you is allowed to smoke. It goes beyond hypocrisy.

@iamjurell Explain how I've not thought it through.
