@johnhenry4844 I want my enemies to wear armor. I want them to be forced to carry that weight, which either forces them to carry less equipment/ammo or makes them less mobile. If I bring a plate busting round, they're just going to drop the plates and run circles around me.

@Asghaad several countries that used bullpups have gone back to traditional rifles

.280 British would have been replaced by a lighter cartridge anyway. It's like 7.62x39, 5.45 is just better.
2
@ThisPartIsAndrew athey've been using captured M16s and M4s for over a decade. Also, you're using the term tolerance wrong.
2
@noonecaresaboutgoogle3219 it wouldn't because light cover would stop the laser while a 6.8 would penetrate more cover than 5.56 so it loses the advantage, while 5.56 also loses because the laser doesn't have the physical effects of bullets hitting cover and making people afraid to get out and line up a shot. There would also be issues with how many sensors per person are required, because you can hit someone with 5.56 in the gut, base of the neck, under the arm, etc.

.30-06 is not much more powerful. Calibers optimized for hunting aren't necessarily better for combat.
1
@MrZnarffy The .30-06 M2 ball load was 152 grains at 2,800 fps. 7.62x51 M80 ball is 147gr at 2,800 fps. Not much difference. Hunting isn't combat.
1
@MrZnarffy A difference of 5 grains. Do you know how much that is? Yes, .30-06 beats 7.62 but by a hair. You said it was MUCH more powerful. That's at least 15-20% more. Not 1%.

This 6.8 round has absolutely nothing to do with the British round. It was comparable to a 7.62x39 in terms of energy.
1
@aaronleverton4221 But the implication is that the British had it right the whole time when they didn't.
1
@larrypelrine1799 We're not "back". This is totally different, it shares the numerical designation but otherwise it has nothing to do with the British developments.

The F-35 is excellent. Please stop reading tabloid articles.

The 1989 Cleveland Elementary/Stockton shooter used a 7.62x39 rifle against children, most survived. Singling out 5.56 is just a matter of perception.

@manny022 how the hell are polymer case rounds going to kill less civilians?
1
@manny022 Dude. 6.8 proposals had to respect the Army's choice of projectile, which is steel core. The polymer is in the CASING.

1. Optics give an advantage to any rifle. 2. You want the enemy to be forced to wear that armor rather than just be lightweight when new bullets make it pointless. 5. Dominating the short range already puts the enemy at a disadvantage as now you can use all sorts of crew served weapons and fire support. You don't want to force short range fights because now you're prevented from using weapons with a significant danger radius. 6. You don't get to pick loadouts lol

Combat isn't hunting. One round doesn't do the job, because most round go into the dirt to force the enemy's head down while you move. The winner of a fight was usually determined by who could bring more firepower to the table. If the enemy can fire at your position all day, you won't be able to aim that single shot.

@longrider42 In Vietnam the US forces adopted 5.56 precisely because of how effective it was in the jungle... Range? The foliage prevented you from seeing past 30-50 yards.
1
The other way around. 5.56 was bad against a insurgency that used harassing fire from outside 5.56 range and forced you to wait for fire support. In all out war the caliber matters less.

@chaoschaoforever 6.8 is garbage, with no offense to the developers. Worse trajectory, much higher ammo weight, only benefit is slight energy advantage. Like the Soviets figured out, 5.45 beats 7.62.
1
@Gearshoot What do you mean, inferior powder? There's no "hotter powder", if you make a cartridge hotter not only do you overgas the rifle, but you also completely make the range settings on the AK sights useless by changing the trajectory.
1
300blk is terrible as the bullet weight is roughly twice of 5.56. Why bother making the change to heavier, shorter range ammo?
1
@gregbagel791 Any unit that would benefit from a 300 BLK already has it in inventory.
