@minhducnguyen9276 If you look at pictures of them (Malaysia and I think Iran have them) there's a metallic bracket that replaces the original handguard and the tube itself becomes the gripping surface.

9mm penetrates through walls as much as 5.56, with the added disadvantage that if it hits something it flattens and keeps going while 5.56 has a chance to break apart and lose energy quickly. Now if you're inside a ship I can see how the steel could potentially only get dented by 9mm and punched through by 5.56, but I'm not sure how thick those steel dividers are.

@avilhelm1697 They made the UMP specifically so that the receiver was universal for all calibers, so that they could save money on production. Changing bolt and barrel allowed you to change calibers and the magazines had the same external dimensions so that they only needed to make one type of receiver for all countries that wanted it. The reason the appeal was limited was that the MP5 was just flat out a better product and countries with existing MP5 inventory would rather pay HK to get replacements than get an inferior but newer weapon.

It was on the actual HK manual. In the original MP5s it was a workaround to avoid wear from what I've read, but it kept being recommended for both using the full power of the spring and to ease the insertion of a full magazine.

Because the manufacturing is expensive too. It's 2021 and it uses old manufacturing techniques. And except for PTR they have to be imported.
