For an excellent book on the finding of the Sydney try "The Search for the Sydney" by David Mearns. David has located dozens of ships including re-finding the Bismark and finding the Hood, Musashi, Derbyshire, Centaur and Rio Grande.

@AlcaturMaethor The problems are many, Pilots are far from ship recognition experts, ask the squadron of US Spitfire Pilots who attacked the Zetland and Bicester Hunt Class destroyers (86 in the class). The Straata Malacca was a ship less than 18 months old and never been in the UK or Australia.

The Kormoran crew reported The a shot from HMAS passed through the funnel. This would not normally be a fatal blow but the Kormoran had her preheating for her fuel in the funnel, This was damages and the oil ignited and flowed into the engine room. Diemers sent the Chief Engineer to carry our firefighting, he was never to see him again. When it became apparent that the engine room fire would prevent any further movement of the ship Dietmers ordered abandon ship. While this was being carried out one of the collapsible lifeboats collapsed while being lowered sending all the men into the sea, these were most of the fatalities. The Aide de camp to Captain Deitmers a Herr Messerschmitt was so appalled by this loss of he set up a company making life rafts.

there is a good web site @defence.gov.au which in detail reconstructs the battle using German witness and analysis of the damage to the Sydney. The shells from Sydney went through the funnel of the Kormorant and damaged the oil preheating equipment causing burning oil to set fire to the engine room. The mines were deliberately detonated by the Kormorant crew. One of the major loss of life on the Kormorant was the failure of a collapsible life boat that failed on launching putting many crew into the sea. This after the War lead to Dietmers ADC a Herr Messerschmidt to start a company making liferafts.

@richardstone3473 If you are on a ship in the middle of the ocean, no moon, no clouds, no pollution, no lights, its hard to pick out the main stars or planets. A hundred million stars in a great dome, and you feel so awestruck and insignificant at the same time.

They did not start looking for the Sydney until five days later and it was a week after the sinking before they reached the site, any survivors well dispersed and by this stage probability none.

@terrenceodgers5866 Not sure any aircraft would know the difference in vessels.
