No port facilities, no flat land, no population, every item would have to be brought there. They also did not use Lewis and Harris. They did use Shetland for land based and seaplanes.

Looked up losses and can only find two damaged by depth charges. HMS Wizard accidentally dropped one at Scapa Flow in shallow water severely damaged and out of action for 11 months. HMCS Assiniboine dropped six depth charges and rammed a U Boat, out of action for 4 and a half months I know there were man survivor's of sinking vessels killed when the vessel sank a the primed depth charges exploded.

Found two more, minor damage unlike the previous ones. HMS Lotus and HMS Puffin damage after dropping there own depth charges in an attack

@brentm9848 It may or may not have been a rogue wave, the actions of the person in charge oof the vessel also count. If the Captain does the sensible actions and reduces speed, heads into the waves, then less damage will be done. Keeping speed and course will cause more damage. Rogue waves are a useful item to blame.

@brentm9848 There is nothing "freak" about a 40 ft wave, that is a normal wave in a Force 9 or 10.
