I feel she surrounds herself in the American bubble. She probably lives in an area of Tokyo where a lot of foreigners live(Azabu-Juban and Roppongi) so many places cater to foreigners and speak English and employ foreigners.

If you are a White Scottish person, you can blend in with rest of the White New Zealanders but the White British guy stands out in a country like Japan because he doesn't look like 97% of the population, which makes things even harder on him.

People will get on me for saying this but if Japan becomes diverse as the US, Japan will not be as it is now. The good things about Japan that people like, the cleanliness, the safety and the politeness and respect will all disappear.
25
@GA-ik6pi Osaka representing Japan is a business decision. Representing Japan makes her a big fish in a small pond, more sponsors. In the US, she would be a small fish in a big pond.
22
Doesn't that apply for any person in any country not just Japan.
22
Osaka is only Japanese by blood she is culturally American since she has lived in America since she was 3 years old. She doesn't behave like a Japanese person, barely speaks Japanese, she is totally American.
21
I feel it's also preference. Some people need and thrive in a big city and some people like the laid back countryside.
21
@jollygoodgordon5580 There is a difference of people of dark skinned Japanese and light skinned Japanese. Dark skinned are considered as lower class and poor because the dark skin is associated with working outside doing manual labor such as farmers and construction workers. While lighter skinned Japanese are considered have a higher education because they are inside and are office workers using their intellect. Even in America, light skinned Black Americans are treated differently than dark skinned Black Americans.

Since the dawn of time humans have been tribal and these tribes and clans always fought.
19
@Critical Strike Forge Obedience to authority? The government has told the public mask wearing is not necessary.
17
@annunakian8054 I was stating population decline is happening in a lot of countries but people also bring up this factor as if Japan is the only country affected by population decline. Population decline is happening in the US but no one brings that up as a factor for problems with the US.
13
I feel bad for the Brazilian guy, the way she spoke it's seemed, she was more interested in the culture. The guy could have been any Brazilian guy as long as he was Brazilian.
12
Almost every Western country has a declining population, and I don't like people using the excuse for Japan.
12
It's interesting, that almost all of the Hafu Blacks, the mother is Japanese. You rarely hear about the mother being Black.
10
I don't know where you got your info but there isn't a huge immigration from western countries into Japan. Japan is 97% Japanese and in the 3% of immigrants, the US isn't even in the top 5.
10
They are not speaking too fast, you are listening too slow.
10
It also has to do with Asians having the ABCC11 gene and Westerners not having this gene.
10
Just to add to your comment. Japanese also want to provide the best service possible and with the language barrier, sometimes orders might get messed up or wrong. Japanese workers don't want you leaving their place with a negative view because of some misunderstandings. They would rather not take your patronage than fail at providing you with the best service possible.

@JCmud351 Living in Japan, i have seen Japanese police stop Japanese people too. The police doesn't target only foreigners.
8
Seen plenty of videos of Americans not wanting to get involved so don't be so righteous about Americans. Have you seen the latest videos of people being assaulted in NYC and no one is doing anything?
8
If you stay in Japan, it's good but you can't afford to travel abroad, the purchase power for the YEN is half of any place you visit.
8
Never happen, you will have to change the mind set of 100 million people. Japan is 97% Japanese, there are still Japanese people that have never met a foreigner.
7
@cooliipie It's kind of nice to be left alone. Don't need people getting in my business.
7
@JCmud351 The foreigners never say it but it's implied. The videos also never say the Japanese police stop Japanese people, they make the videos to sound like the police only target foreigners because it gets clicks when you imply racism.
7
Being Japanese is by bloodlines not being born in Japan unlike the US. That's why some foreigners have their babies in the US to get their children American citizenships.
7
Probably American military.
7
Inflation in Japan is 3% while in the US it's almost 10%. Rent in Tokyo has too many variables to the price.
7
So you should change who you are? If you are a loud and boisterous person, you should become timid and shy, basically change your personality.
7
It’s due to the media. American movies, TV shows and even magazines are prevalent in Japan.
6
@larryjane06 You don't have to be American to be triggered. Also saying Japanese people aren't hard working is BS. I have seen plenty of hard-working Japanese people.
6
Very easily, those people stay in the foreigner bubble. They only have foreigner friends and speak English a majority of the time. You can get by with just a basic understanding of the language. With translation apps and accommodating Japanese people, it can be done
6
@AKRex Yes, she did, she said, the guy told her what was right and wrong for her and object to what she was doing.
6
Foreigners are used to loud and noisy people, so they miss the chaos.
6
I wonder if the dynamic of having a Japanese father versus a Japanese mother is different in the outcome.
6
Visiting and living are two different things which can be said for both NYC and Tokyo.
6
I wear them to keep my face warm.
5
So the chance of Asians being discriminated is very low?
5
The hardest part would be the language. When you grocery shop the product labels will be in Japanese and when you talk to people you need to be very specific about animal products in certain foods.
5
Most American movies on TV and in theatres are dubbed.
5
@containeduniverselow4790 This was started centuries ago. Royalty and people with money stayed indoors to read and listened to music and so on while the commoners and workers like farmers, fisherman, gardeners worked in the sun differentiating the class system.
5
There is a saying, always give 110 percent in whatever you do.
5
He's a young guy, high points, well educated, has a master's, high points again. 10 points for going to a recognized university. He has a very high-income job, high points again and extra points after passing the baseline of salary, every million yen, you get an extra point. He is JLPT1, more points. It can be done.
5
@Mryodamiles Exactly, people are making a big deal about crime increasing but it's just being shown on the news now, crime is actually down in NYC.
4
@Unknown-hj7uc Japan gets a lot of pressure from other countries like the US to get more diverse. They want Japan to mirror the US have lots of people of color in their country. America doesn't like the population being 97% Japanese.
4
Most Japanese don't speak a 2nd language so they don't want to embarrass themselves if a foreigner speaks to them.
4
Japanese study English in school but once they get out of school, they don't practice it. They don't retain the knowledge because there isn't an opportunity to use English on a constant basis.
4
A lot of the discrimination has to with not knowing the language and cultural differences. The landlords won't rent because most people don't know the language so they can't communicate what is needed and following the rules.
4
It's been that way since the dawn of time. Women want a taller man because they see men as protectors and providers. They see shorter men as inferior not up to their level. They think, how is this little guy going to protect me if something happens.
4
The majority of the jobs are tech or English teaching. Takashi also stops people on the street, so he has no control of where people work. Luck of the draw.
4
Well, look at the guy that was a JET and changed to a student Visa just so he could keep staying in Japan.
