  1. A lot has to do with the language barrier. Japanese aren't good at speaking other languages so they don't want to get caught by a foreigner to speak. Most foreigners are wearing headphones or are glued to their phones now so most Japanese will sit by them because they know they won't have to interact and speak with them.
