  1. It also depends on the tattoo. If you have a butterfly on your shoulder or wrist compared to a huge swastika on your back or Satan on your chest, there's a big difference. Tattoos have been associated with criminals in Japan. The blanket objection to tattoos at pools and onsens was used to keep the criminals out of these places since a majority of the people with tattoos were criminals.
