Dust cover is a safety on the grease gun.

Also, a dust cover combined with a safety isn't unique to the grease gun. Last time I checked the AK uses a system that combines them as well.

If you're in a hot situation, rack the bolt close the dust cover. When you want to fire open the dust cover and you can fire. That's not as ergo as modern safeties....but not that hard or slow. The dust cover interacts with the bolt preventing NDs. If you're having ND's you're handling the weapon incorrectly. It was a much more complete weapon than say...the sten.

The answer to your criticism and the answer to nearly all military questions comes down to one thing logistics. What was the need of a grease gun? A cheaper Thompson and a gun for people who carrying a M1 carbine was inconvenient. Complexity is the enemy of effective military firearms.

@Shepard_AU 1. The grease gun dust cover interfaces with the bolt aka the hammer of the gun. So functionality is effectively the same as the AK. 2. Yes 1990 seems like a long time, but considering what it was being used for, Tank crews, it was more than sufficient. Just because a design is old or used for a long time doesn't really count against it. Ma' Duece is still the primary HMG of the US ground forces. We're under 10 years till we hit the 100th anniversary of that design (if I remember correctly). If we were using the grease gun as a primary battle implement, then yeah it really needed replacement. But as far as something that's got a 0.00000065% chance of getting used. It was sufficient and better than only giving them a M9 handgun.
