@thomaskinoshta French life expectancy is also 83 compared to the American 77 which would seem to suggest living standards is still quite a few notches higher in France compared to the US.

@@jameswilliams3304 They are not Russian tanks, they are actually high quality armor.

@peter25681 I think you missed the fact that China spends more money on their internal security for their own population than they do on their military. They have 1.4 billion people in China and they put a lot of effort into controlling them.

@hilliard665 It's a French loanword that got adopted into the English language. The Latin language died in the 700s AD so it's pretty obvious the loanword comes from French not Latin. It might have its root in Latin but it did not come into the English language through Latin it came from French. Besides since Latin died so long ago nobody can tell for sure how to pronounce it. It's quite possible that the Latin root is pronounced in a completely different manner than how we pronounce it today.

There's a difference between Russian tanks and actual real tanks though.

Plenty of them, Finland has military service and 80% of their male population has completed military service which they then come back to brush up now and then once they get older. As a result the like 25% of the finish population are reserves in the Finish army and will be called up if war occurs.

Not sure what you mean about drawing in other nations, I am pretty sure Britain had already declared war on Germany after they invaded Poland which was before Germany totally smashed France. Not sure why the Germans would be afraid to draw in the Netherlands and Belgium, either - two little dwarves compared to the German war machine. The Maginot line was a failure and it showed the vast different military strategy of the Germans and the French. The French had planned for warfare like it was fought in WW1 with trench warfare. The Germans did not play that game and simply circumvented the defenses making them completely useless. All that time and funds spent planning and building it, training soldiers to hold it meant very little, 6 weeks is all it took for the Germans to take France. The French put all their eggs into one basket.

@superdatcha4218 Yep and they only joined the American revolution once America had inflicted serious defeats on the British army and France realized America was going to win the war. It's always easy to join the winning side.

Both means love, devotion and loyalty towards one's own country and they are used interchangeably by most ordinary folks. In the political sphere they are bunched together or separated as a cudgel for people with the opposite political views. Like in the US where the left will separate the two to sow division and gain political points against the republicans and republicans vice versa to bunch the two together and claim the democrats don't love their country. In modern day US when you see newspapers and politicians pushing this quote you know they are on the left opposing Trump trying to categorize their own into "good, loving citizens" and their political opponents as "evil, haters". The best thing I ever did was becoming independent, it's pitiful to see people from different camps trying to bend and twist definitions and words to paint their opposition as evil.

Only works on second grade armies like the Russians.
