Lived in China teaching English for two years at Tsinghua university. Have two adopted Chinese sisters. This was back in 06-08. Most of all you said is spot on. And just in the decade-ish since I've been there, things have declined quite a bit I hear. Still in contact with a lot of other teachers there and they're all preparing to come back to the US. The retail bubble is the key, I cannot even begin to tell you how crazy it really gets. Real estate is the main way people hold wealth in China, unlike the West (stocks). Also when I was there 1USD was about 8.5 yuan. Now its down to 7.1.
I think the wealth gap is the craziest thing I saw there. You think it's bad here? Go to China. Commonly, multiple times a day, you'll be on a highway with Audis, Ferraris, Aston Martins. Right next to it are ricksaws with donkeys. Multi-million hundred dollar skyscrapers. Right next to it are corrugated steel slum housing. Its bonkers. There is no middle class, and also there is zero dating. Every Saturday in the court outside my campus, they'd have these events where all these womens fathers would show up to "sell" their daughters to the most wealthy man that 'applies'. Every single Saturday. They'd even have binders showing multiple pictures, qualities of the woman or the man, their SALARY, etc. Madness.
Side note, I'd ask most Chinese I befriended what they thought of Taiwan. Down to a person, every single one said its part of China and they'd serve in the PLC to get it back. Never met a single person who had a different opinion. They'd differ on Xi, government, etc. But they were all down for Taiwan. They said its comparable to if the Nazis (the KMT was pretty nationalistic) still existed on some island right off the shore of Europe. Couldn't live with it right?
