***** This isn't a freedom of speech issue. He can still say or post whatever he wants. The government had nothing to do with this--it's a public relations issue not a first amendment one.

+John McClane When you work for a company and are a public figure you are subject to the PR of that company. He can still express his opinions so suck it up, Buttercup.
1
John McClane No, he doesn't have to worry about what ESPN wants anymore. He is now free to say whatever he wants.

John McClane So what? If the company you work for doesn't have a problem with what you post they won't fire you. If the company your work for as a public figure has a public relations issue with what you post they will fire you. Free Market System Baby!

John McClane No. It's just life. Freedom of expression isn't the freedom against public disapproval. If you think you have something valuable to contribute--say it, but you can't whine when other people say they think you're wrong. Sorry, freedom of expression goes all ways.

John McClane And if you don't like ESPN, don't watch it. Boycott it even.

+Brian Odom When you work for a company and are a public face, you are subject to that company. He still has all the freedom he had before. He can still express his opinions, he just doesn't have a job on ESPN.

Brian Odom He does have the freedom of expression. He can, and has, posted what he wanted. What he doesn't have is a right to have a job on ESPN. And have you actually had to shut up about the Harriet Tubman on the 20 bill? You don't have a right to make other people not express themselves either. If they find what you say repulsive they have a right to say so. Freedom of expression doesn't mean that everyone else has to shut up either.

Brian Odom I'm not nitpicking over terms. I'm saying that you don't have a freedom from criticism. Gay people in the past actually were put in jail for expressing themselves, this guy just got fired.

It needs to be remembered that this isn't a violation of free speech--the government didn't do this, a private company did. He still has the right to post whatever bigoted thing he wants to on whatever social media he wants so long as he doesn't violate the policies of that private company.
