Gas stations often lose money on gas if the customer pays with a credit card. The tiny bit of profit they get rarely covers the maintenance and regulations of those pumps. They only sell gas to get people to stop at the store and hopefully buy something inside that actually makes money.

@notpeachtea6028 Your understanding is very limited. America imports a lot of crude and exports gasoline. Russian and Venezuela crude use to be imported to be refined here and then exported as gasoline. Sanctions has stopped these imports, so there is less to refine. Oil production is up domesticly , because there is a price incentive to pump more from active wells to make up for a decrease in imports.
