To bad you didn't cover today. They are scrapping hand over fist all the early super carriers. If we get into a war with China over the South China Sea - or a resurgent Russia - we could start losing carriers and those things take forever to build a new one. One factor here - is that as with submarines and tanks, they have to keep building them or they'll lose the facilities that can do it - and then won't be able to build any in the future. As with the bases that were closed - that land would be re-purposed - and even trying to create a new facility would become problematic. The Bean Counters are running things and as I said to people during the Draw Down when they would be aghast at what was being done: "The mistake you are making is assuming that things being all fucked up is an unacceptable state of affairs." .
