  9. Hi Todd, no problem at all on constructive criticism, I appreciate your comments. Yes, the subject is certainly more complicated and I simplified it to make a short video. Two of the main anthropologists that have studied the ankle bone disagree with exactly how his foot was nailed to the cross. One says from the side the other from the front. There is also disagreement, as you brought up, as to how body weight would be supported for a person nailed to a cross through the hands. Some say through the palms would support the body weight. Others see it as the individual was probably nailed through the hands and tied to the beam with rope at the same time. And others see the nail more through the wrist bones. Josephus says that the Romans nailed people to crosses in different ways, and this would most likely be proved true if there were multiple finds to compare. However, so far these are the only two individuals that are considered evidence for crucifixion. (The reason there are not more finds is that the nails were extracted and reused.) The general point I try to make in the video is that the understanding that Jesus was nailed to the cross is substantiated by these archaeological finds. Does the Bible say Jesus was nailed to the cross, yes. Does archaeology show that Romans nailed people to crosses, yes. I personally, do not consider the language and general descriptions used in the Bible to be so precise that an individual nailed through his wrist and ankle could not also be understood or described as being nailed through his hands and feet. This is archaeological evidence that matches the historical evidence that in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus, Romans crucified their victims by nailing them to crosses.

This variant is known (some from the Galilee) and there are many parallels as there also are for the lunate forms and simplified Iota from the Greek name of Jesus found in many other inscriptions.   20. Thank you for your enthusiasm! From the evidence we know that the the cross was olive wood. From the descriptions of Josephus, an A.D. first century historian, we know that the Romans crucified people in a variety of different positions and ways, but he does also mention crosses specifically.

  22. The sulfur balls are not uniform in size. Some are as small as a pebble and others are as big as baseballs. I assume how big they are has to do with several factors including how long they burned for before hitting water and how much erosion they went through after eroding out of the rock.

  36. With the ankle bone there was a piece of wood between the nail head and the ankle to prevent it from tearing out. This same tactic was probably used for the hands as well. Also, many believe that the victim was both nailed and tied to the cross.

  50. Locals continually dig in these sites searching for antiquities they can sell. These are all the pits you see in the aerial footage on the video. Also, these are excavated and published sites from excavations from the 1960's and into the 80's.
