One of the main arguments that I heard for Brexit was the issue of independence from Brussels, i.e. the argument was that Brussels kept pushing a bunch of laws and regulations that the British had nothing to do with, but had to ratify in parliament. There was so much irrelevant load that laws were being pushed through that parliamentarians didn't even bother to read. It was also very difficult not to ratify them, because that would carry negative consequences for the UK. In other words, the broad claim was that the EU seriously harmed British democracy, effectively making it (and other EU states) semi-democratic at best. I don't know how this changed post-Brexit, but it was a pretty important argument. It would be interesting to hear it addressed.
