Small note: The British and French did nothing not only because they wanted to avoid war at all costs, but also because their leaders were very sympathetic to Hitler's race theories and general ideology. They didn't want him to start a war with the rest of the world, but they did want him to succeed as a politician. This is especially true but Chamberlain, who was an extremely strong leader and not a pushover by any means. They were not just doing nothing to stop Hitler – they were helping him, up to a point.
