This is another reason why polarisation damns societies. How obvious would it be that Bill Clinton was not simply "a really liberal politician"? This would be obvious to less polarised people. To polarised people (especially those who wear their binary leaning as an identity - I'm "a liberal", "a conservative" etc.) it's not obvious, because this person is either your enemy or your advocate (ostensibly). Same deal with Obama. I'm compelled to defend him more often than condemn him because of the unreasonable attacks from the enemy tribe - if they say he's a radical extreme left communist then naturally my inclination is to defend him. I don't truly want to defend him though ideally because he isn't an advocate for progressives, he's another interchangeable actor. There are issues that I'm highly polarised on - namely civil rights. If you think gay people shouldn't have equal rights because of your prejudices (including religious conditioning) then I won't budge on that because it's wrong to treat people in foul ways because their orientation disgusts you when they're harming nobody. When it comes to differing philosophies like socialism vs capitalism vs blends of the two vs libertarianism etc., these are far more subjective and there is no reason we should be so pathetically controlled by our differences. NEVER use generalisations. When you do, you perpetuate the problem. "The liberals say" "Conservatives always" - you're repeating the cycle because you're being unreasonable and that promps counter-attacks. We are being divided and controlled by the level above the polarised left/right system and so long as we are, we will be fucked and only ever lash out at 'the enemy tribe' like the puppets that we are. We'll always have differing views but taking that step to wearing these political definitions as skins is to be a slave to the polarisation 'divide and control' game. It's not about working with the other side, it's about breaking out of the 'other side' mentality that's ingrained in all humans and exploited in most.
