  1. John has been in top form for the past year or so now. He's bang on about 'manliness' - to me it has nothing to do with being the opposite of a woman (what makes a woman a woman?) and has everything to do with not being like a child/adolescent. If superficial would-be-manliness defined what it meant to be a man then teenage boys would be the manliness people on Earth - they're brilliant at emulating adults; the girls mimicking womanhood and the boys passing themselves off as real men. Sometimes I see 13 year olds walking and talking just like their fathers and in their little group I imagine each is certain he's the most mature and manliest guy in the street but it's this superficiality and bondage to convention, trend, and set of social rules that marks them as underdeveloped on a personal level. Being a man is knowing you're a man and knowing that the rest of the world can't define you. To me that's not being like a child/adolescent - a child/pre-adult (speaking generally) hasn't mastered restraint or self control, will lash out the moment the emotion takes them, will throw tantrums, and will assume any shape their society tells them they should be in order to be accepted. The kids who have already risen past that? They're a fucking inspiraton.
