  2. +madhtrr All of these accidental shootings of oneself and one's family members at the hands of gun enthusiasts says that familiarity with guns and a knowledge of gun safety doesn't stop people a) shooting people they didn't mean to shoot b) using the guns to deliberately shoot people. Under adult supervision reduces the stigma and legal fear of one's child using a handgun at all. It increases the likelihood of saying "Now you're not 14 yet so you can only use this when the grown ups are around but here's your very own handgun" and that child, being a child, breaking the supervision rule because they're a freaking child.
