 @johno195 people have different chemical reactions to alcohol. Scientists have isolated genes which shows predisposition to alcoholism. The more it's studied, the more we'll learn.

There's a genetic predisposition. It's definitely not a choice when genes have been found to predipose people to alcoholism. Everyone's brain reacts differently to substances of all kinds. Obviously the choice is how a person deals with the predisposition. Just like diabetes, for example.

@TB-us7el I understand what predisposition means. Depending on the illness/disorder, genetic predisposition can make a person twice as likely to have it.

@TB-us7el I understand exactly what genetic predisposition to alcohol addiction means. I highly recommend everyone read Matthew's memoir, or listen to the audio book, which is narrated by Matthew.

@peterjory7531 "Jeanne"? Are you kidding me🤣 But seriously, do some reading about people with mutation in ALDH1 or ALDH2, who metabolize alcohol differently, which has an effect on tolerance.

Not true. I've read his book. It's excellent. He's talking about the neuroscience of addiction, the fact that people are either genetically predisposed to alcoholism, or not. But he does take responsibility. In his book he says many times that it's his responsibility to avoid the first drink. RIP Matthew
