40% of Chicago Public School Teachers send their own children to Private Schools. Of course, when you're on 70K a year, you can afford that. Unlike the average Chicagoite, who is lucky to make $36K. For them they're only option is over priced crappy public screwles.

The fact is, 40% of Chicago PUBLIC school teachers send their own children to PRIVATE school. This is a FACT. You can look up the numbers. You'll find a similar numbers across the States. The Finish model is totally different, as far as mass schooling, it's reasonable. The Japanese model works like this, up at 5am, study, go to school at 7am, come home at 4pm, go back to cram school at 6pm come home at 11pm. Six days a week. In Japan you will sit classroom style WORKING as an ADULT

You seem to be rambling - for most of history children learned from their family. In Japan, as an example, they had the highest literacy rate in the world (still one of the highest) and did NOT have public schools. Likewise, in 1910 the USA had a 90% literacy rate WITHOUT public schools. Many Public Schools in the USA churn out 85% literacy! This means in 100 years we're going backwards! Those are the facts. If you want your children to learn, best to do some form of homeschooling if possible.

I find private schooled kids have driven parents and that can stress out the kids who then become high-strung. Many public schooled kids parents don't really care what their children learn. As for homeschooled kids, I find they are very polite and well mannered. Some adults see them as petulant - that's because they find it disturbing when a teenager speaks to them as an adult and they don't like it. These kids are WAY further along in their studies. Their only downfall can be religion.

Unless you advocate taking children from their families and putting them into the care of the State, then family culture is just something that will have be lived with. I personally think a society based on private individualism will encourage families to value their children - particularly once those Public menaces: Welfare and SSI are eliminated. THEN you watch as parents start thinking twice about how they raise those kids - the ones THEY will one day depend upon.

Ethics, the study of morality, is not based on religion. It predates Christianity and was formalized with the early Greeks. Immanuel Kant would be a good start (even though he was a Christian, he certainly didn't bring religion into the logic of morality). I find ANY form of superstitious thinking to be improper parenting. Children learn their behavior from their parents which aligns with their society - as for their morals, most people do not study and have no knowledge of Ethics.

How many countries have you lived in? I've lived in five. If anyone here is small minded - it's you. As for homeschooling, I'd prefer a mix where kids learn at home and socialize at sport and arts which could be in a public area or private. As for your rant about home-schooled kids being sociopaths, this is nonsense. The latest research suggests sociopathy has a genetic basis which is best dealt with by a loving family.

Also, with internet access nearly universal and cheap (even the homeless have cellphones) ANY child has access to the best tutors, the world's libraries and best of all it's all for FREE. The poorest child has access to learn anything and everything a rich child could want to learn. The only difference is family culture, and that can only change once we eliminate the role the State has presumed itself to have in the private family. Remove the State from the family and watch society blossom.

You think public school "socializes" children properly? You are the one insane. It is NOT natural to have 30-50 children with a single adult. The ONLY socializing is children in a Lord of the Flies fashion. Public school children tend to be horribly little shits who pick on the weakest -bullying and rarely ever sticking up the weak or different. Oh, but they do learn to raise their hand when they need to pee. That should help them out in prison where they can put that 'social skill' to good use

Considering OUR public schools are modeled on Prussian public schools, I think my example is not cherry picking. This IS what our public school system is based on. The entire model of a 'Teacher'/Drill Sargent in front of rows of Learners/Recruits is based on military training. This is great if your goals is to train Worker Cogs to work in factories (generally owned by aristocrats). Those days are GONE forever yet we're stuck with the legacy of an education system to make worker cogs.

"Fact? And why is that? Do you suppose?" The average amount spent per child in public school in the US is $11,000 up to $18000. That's per CHILD. Think of a classroom of 35 students. That's over $400,000 per classroom being spent. Yet many of these kids had old computers (or none), out of date books and apathetic teachers burnt out by the system going through the motions. The Public School system does NOT serve society and is 'teaching' children to be COGS for factories that no longer exist.

And to TTYTT I really don't care what you do or how you raise your children. I just don't want you or your kids around my children. Is PRIVATE schooling any better? Nope. You'll find a mono-culture of peer pressure and competitive adults. Lucky enough for my daughter, there are alternative learning environments proven to be superior to both. And given her father is a doctor who teaches medicine - she'll be just fine. Lets hope the Union breaks soon so neither of us have to deal with one anther.

Thom's argument can basically be summed up as a progressive demagoguery as he cherry picks history making connections with anything and everything that he thinks supports his argument. The fact is public schools were modeled after the Prussian public 'education' model which itself was modeled on the Prussian military. The goal being factory cogs for the Aristocrats factories. Sadly, here we have Thom blinding championing public schools INSTEAD of education.
