I agree drinking soda/sugar drinks is causing health problems. As is smoking, watching TV, driving, eating fatty food, drinking, etc.... That's not the point. Passing this law violated Civil Rights and limits free volentary exchange between two Citizens. It is an inevitable outcome of the government getting involved in health - expect many more limitation on your freedoms and Civil Liberties.

Yes Thom, let people get fat and die. There is nothing wrong with living an indulged short enjoyable life. Oh, but now that we have "State" healthcare we can't let people eat what they want. Thank Thom, your a good example of what's wrong with America.

The 7-11 store ownder's freedom to sell a BIG Gulp is being violated. The customer's right to buy a BIG Gulp is being violated. You don't really get it. I didn't even have passports a hundred years ago. Did you know in some countries you need a University certificate to be a babysitter. Welcome to the Nanny State.

The store owner has the civil right, as in RIGHT, to conduct a voluntary peaceful trade with another citizen. That other citizen has a civil right to voluntary peaceful trade. When the government passes a law restricting our civil rights it can only enforce that law by violating our liberty - either by sending a police officer, the military, etc... and direct that force against the Citizen. This use of force is a violation of our Civil Liberties. Not that it matters, they'll be gone soon.

You seem to be confusing morality (which is studied through Ethics) and Law. The two topics overlap in that we generally like to make Laws that align with moral concepts. Lawmakers do not have the power to determine what is Law willy nilly. They must follow the Constitution. That includes the Supreme Court. The State should not interfere in free voluntary peaceful trade between Citizens. When it does - you should know our beloved Republic is no more. IMO the "America" idea died long ago.
