Thom, WHY do you always have to paint everything as a zero sum game? WHY? Why? Is it your ratings are dropping? It just makes no sense. Suppose I invented a new medicine that cured cancer. I didn't patent it, but, I also wouldn't let anyone know how to make it. Then I sell it. I become a billionaire. AM I taking from society by curing people of cancer? NO... I'm not. You're really doing the point in your show a disservice IF it was to educate people. Because that you are not doing.

I lived in USA 20 years and I lived in AU for 15 years and I also lived in NZ as well as Japan for years. So, no, actually I have a very good idea of how things inside, and outside, of America work. My advice to you is to keep paying your income tax and let your betters in the federal government do the thinking for you.

(1) "The Federal Government" doesn't subsidize anything. It administers income tax and does so poorly. (2) "Obviously balance works"... explain why. Because it is NOT obvious. You just post MOST drugs are derived from public funding. (3) Tuition pays MOST of the bills that supports research. About 80% of research is paid through tuition. Grants mainly support wages, travel and consumables. Given I do medical research (15 years both public and private) I think I understand how the system works.

"Public money" is just a polite way of saying Income Tax. Do you REALLY think government bureaucratic spending money they didn't earn is the best way to fund drug research? When $100s of millions of 'public money' (and that's peanuts) is that money we spent? $240,000 a year for a Professor to dabble in drug discovery is BETTER than private researchers? That's a curious position to take. Maybe we should increase your income tax 20%.... for the public good, whatever that is.

I'd also like to point out you are wrong regarding basic research - it most certainly is done in the private sector and done better. Imagine living in Communist China 25 years ago trying to make the argument for Capitalism? Someone LIKE YOU would say "we wouldn't have all this stuff (roads, medicine, etc..) without Government spending. AND you'd be right. What you can not know, is how much BETTER those things would have been in a free-market based on Capitalism because that world wouldn't exist

One quick question: Is 5 out 21 'influential' drugs were developed using public money, why have anything private? Its quite obvious money is much more efficiently and better spent on drug discovery when "the government is paying" - So? Why have a Private sector at all?

You really have no clue. Most of this is paid for through bond sales. Do you know who pays back 30 year State and Federal bonds? Children. So, it most certainly wasn't THAT generation. They sold bonds, gave themselves jobs, and now we have to pay back with interest - only now most of the roads, bridges, sewers are barely functional. 'The' Government doesn't PAY for shit. It taxes the laborer, that's you, gives itself a hefty admin fee, and then maybe a teeny tiny amount might go to research.
