She had to fight NIjalingappa(very tough to write as well as pronounce),K Kamraj, Morarji Desai, all senior congress leaders and had rough journey till 1970 with winning against Desai to become PM after Shastri's death( remember that Desai was FM in Nehru Cabinet whereas Nehru didnt give her any post, she was inducted into Cabinet under Shastri after Nehru's death as Information & Broadcasting Minister, so he was much more senior to her),then horrific election of 1967 for INC when it lost power in UP,Bihar,TN,WB,MP,etc and had won only 283 seats down from 361 in 1962(today INC will be dying to get that) and saw rise of socialists and Jana Sangh,then there was tough Presidential election of VV Giri vs Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, abolition of Privy Purse to princely states, Nationalisation of banks, and subsequent breaking of Cong. Later after 1971 Indo-Pak war and all opposition joinng hands and her "Garibi Hatao" made a smooth sail for her. Later we all know.
