Ian, no, the economic sanctions are to stop a fanatical Islamic fascist theocracy, which has vowed to exterminate Israel, from developing a nuclear weapon.

Rohypno, no, the whole world fears the rabid Ayatollah developing nuclear weapons.

What does everyone want ? a) The US want a passive Iran (preferably with an Ayatollah). b) Iran want to be left alone : free to sell oil and support terror groups like Hezbollah c) Saudi have a hatred of Iran and are VERY fearful of a nuclear Ayatollah. d) Israel are maximally afraid of a nuclear Ayatollah who has vowed to exterminate them. e) Russia seek to capitalize on any consequences.(oil prices rising etc) f) Europe want peace, especially France with big contracts in Iran. So who attacked the tankers ? Iran obviously : they are the only beneficiaries of closing the Straits. So why did Iran shoot a US drone ? because a short messy conflict could end with sanctions being lifted. Iran are sinking and desperate, a messy conflict with global repercussion is their only hope.

Carolinian, you are the first person to speak sense. Of course you are dead right. (Although I think you fail to appreciate how dangerous a nuclear armed rabid Ayatollah would be.)

@BothHands1 , that's a fair suggestion but let's consider what it would require :- a) the Saudis get an Iranian boat and dress mercenaries in Iranian uniforms. b) Attack the tankers c) remove a mine and then take drive the boat to Iran ! How do they get away with that ? The Iranians acknowledge their boat removed a mine but won't let anyone see the mine or photograph it.. Your suggestion is simply highly improbable.

@BothHands1 , It didn't HAVE to dock in Iran but it was tracked on radar returning there. Which would be strange if it were a mercenary false flag. I can't find a source that Iran acknowledged they removed 'a mine' ; it's possible I extrapolated that information from Iran's declaration that it would close the Straits, from the colour photo of Iranian revolutionary Guard removing the mine and from the fact that only Iran stand to gain. (The US are winning hands down and don't want anything resembling a conflict. Iran's economy is in free-fall).
