Historical analysis :- (I've actually made a video on this topic) a) In North America , during colonial times the Governor might be the 12th riches person in a town. Many merchants were wealthier and wealth brings political influence. So even though North and South America were autocratic , in the North t was ameliorated by trade. In South America the Church and State (governor and deputies) were usually the wealthiest. There was no challenge from the commercial sector. b) The Hidalgo (minor noble : about 25% of Spains population, Conquistadors etc) Thought nwork and trade was beneath him. He came to the Americas to find a village to support him : he had a medieval feudal mentality. Not a northern European trading mentality. c) The Church monopolised education and censorship. It kept independent intellectual movements supressed. d) Juan Alberdi (South America's "Tom Paine" ) educated by Jesuits, said "Let us be catholic as our fathers were, as is proper to our race and culture". He couldn't see past his own enslavement. In 1557 a Frenchman Nicholas Barnaud wrote a book on "Voluntary Servitude" which sums up Juan Alberdi to a tee. e) The Cuidallo (Strongman leader) : Spanish-America segued naturally into military dictatorship and the people embraced ther strongman leader. See Juan Peron : Evita was deified as a spiritual leader. Spain had been kept isolated from the European Enlightenment and clung to a superstitious mindset.
