  1. They should dump the Chinese characters and adopt the Western alphabet. Imagine all those 150,000 characters , it makes no sense.

  2. Cineva, one of the reasons China atrophied over the centuries (falling behind the West) was because academics aspired to pass the Confucian exam, part of which was memorizing 150,000 characters. It makes no sense. You can see how it evolved but now it needs dumping. I love history & culture and hope that printer is given a grant to help store it all. LoneRiderz, even simplified it is 30,000......it needs dumping. Andy, have you ever read one of those compressed Chinese books ? You would still need to memorize 30,000 characters and lose the nuance of the remaining 120,000. It's ridiculous.

  3. Andy, " have you read any Chinese books ?" LOL no I haven't but I've read Confucius in translation. Germaine + Andy, you're missing my point. The Western alphabet is technically superior. It is like a country using binary for mathematics. They can accomplish everything a decimal (Math) country can but it is needlessly complex. Andy , let me translate your final comment :- " You have probably never heard of vertical Chinese Classics and your opinion of Chinese writing and culture is laughable. " LOL
