The Ottoman Empire collapsed in 1922 The Jews elected an Administrative Council (to shadow the British governors) The Palestinians had the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem (appointed by the British) The Mufti looked to Damascus as the Palestinian capital : the Palestinian farmers had no notion of what a state was : for centuries they had been told "The Sultan is our Lord on Earth" There was no such thing as land ownership (until Europe forced the Tanzimat reforms) all land was owned by the Sultan. Palestinian woes, and the failure of the Arab Spring, are the legacy of the Caliphate.
