Donald Trump , out here spreading bad information. There was nothing "disastrous" about the actual introduction of the M 16 as a combat rifle. The largest problem was the Army Ordnance production of 5.56 mm ammunition using a different ( older type ) of powder. That both fouled the rifles more than the intended powder that Stoner used, and changed the extraction pressure as well as timing of the gas system. Stoner didn't put much work in the Colt built M 16, he designed the original 5.56mm cartridge, Jim Sullivan and Bob Fremont had done most of the design work on the AR 15, which Colt manufactured as the M 16. The first M 16's went to the Air Force, and worked well, till the fouling from the powder change and lack of chrome lining led to adversity in field usage in Vietnam for the Army versions. Ian covered this in interviews with Jim Sullivan for InRangeTV : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LyXndCxn9K4&t=20s
