Two years living here in Japan, and not able to speak Japanese? That's beyond stupid ! When my company moved me to lived here in Tokyo years ago, the first thing that I did was to enrolled myself to a Japanese language school and joined the local community clubs ( I joined hiking, pottery and photography club ). After a year my Japanese language improved so much that Im able not just to carry a conversation but also to read newspapers and magazines.

@kitchfacepalm Thar's definitely a pretty lame excuse. I work in a multi national company here in Tokyo and English is the main language at work, yet I ( most of my colleagues, actually ) managed to converse in Japanese fluently. Granted, the first year was a challenge but after that it's pretty smooth sailing. I suspect it's because he's not smart enough or he's way too lazy to learn it. Or both.
