Public housing went downhill once it became less racist.

The poor trashed out many public housing complexes in the U.S. Rebuilding them would do little good if you fill them with the same kind of people. The Section 8 housing voucher program just allowed the problem to spread and many once neighborhoods have been trashed out by these people.

New York City was spending far more than it was taking in. Rent control made apartment rentals unprofitable and new construction almost came to a stop. Increasing taxes and crime caused many businesses to leave the city further reducing tax revenue.

The apartments worked as long as you placed a minimal amount of behavior standards in. While it is a white fantasy to think if you pat their hand, say a few kind words the poor will be better people. The sad truth is a lot of poor have neither the ability or the intelligence to be good citizens. They lead disordered lives that not only bring themselves down but bring down the people that surround them. Public housing will not work with these kind of people.

LOL... still blaming Reagan. You guys create a huge government that has so many nooks and crannies for money to fall into. Missing money, wayward government agencies come with big government.

@paulomilan515 The type of people you find on Section 8.

@neodym5809 Wear and tear from use is another issue. I did know a girl from Alabama who was in public housing and she said management was strict and inspections were done on a regular basis and her complex was crime free and well kept. She sent pictures and from what I can see they were nice as any higher income apartment complex. I am not against public housing but I think standards must be set in order to preserve quality of life.

@paulomilan515 No argument from me, rents are very high in NYC. Even where I live rents have gone up dramatically. I have pondered the question of does Section 8 make rents higher? Like colleges and student loans and medical care, once government money is thrown into the pot, any reason to keep prices reasonable go out the window. I am not aware of any studies on the subject. I have no idea how someone on the typical Social Security check can pay for rent these days.

@ThaOneChrisJONES Huge government means money goes missing easily. And which party wants HUGE government?

Privatizing sometimes gives operation flexibility rulebook government employees do not have. When contracts are written basic requirements have to be written in.
