Hawaii would have been a territory of Imperial Japan or controlled by the People's Republic of China today. Better a bunch of Jesus Sugar Americans.

@sleezy3331 I was amused he used a soap advertisement about the white man's burden but he neglects to mention that thinking usually came from the Democrat Party. The Party has had a storied past in making enemies out of parts of the population for political gain. As I had mentioned elsewhere the Philippines was never really seen as a future part of the United States and the country was set on a path for independence not long after it came under U.S. control.

A lot of people think before the United States all the ancestors did was sit around the campfires at night and sing happy songs. It was all so romantic and sweet.

Hawaii is too prime to be left alone. Imperial Japan had an eye on Hawaii and the islands would have made a nice addition to the empire portfolio. Hawaii is not that economically strong and China would have been more than happy to advance money in exchange for other advantages. Neither nation would have given a hoot for the natives if they had taken possession.

@ralphiemcdingus2075 Hawaii would have made a terrific eastern outpost for the co-prosperity sphere. This way Japan could keep an eye out for the comings and goings of the United States and in today's terms, the growing influence of China. With a major naval base in Japan and one in Hawaii, the Japanese could control the south Pacific quite nicely, more so if they also held the Philippines. That said, the Chinese have extended their influence through parts of the south Pacific now and as some countries have found, the Chinese are not above suggesting the thoughtful paths they should take.

Poor Johnny Harris... China has been threatening Taiwan for years. And the United States did little about it for years.

The Philippines couldn't settle on a leader so they started fighting each other. This occurred in Korea right after World War 2 after they became independent of Japan in 1945.

This was a political document/video, not history.

You had political games going on between factions. The U.S. gave Cuba independence in 1902 and you can see how the history worked out for Cubans.

The Philippines was set to be independent in 1936. Independence was pushed back because of Japanese aggression in Asia. The Japanese had nothing to do with Philippines independence.

The Philippines was never considered a part of the United States but actually was a sort of trusteeship with independence in the near future (1936). The same for the rest. Puerto Rico is not a state because it was seen as going independent like Cuba did.

I always enjoy asking people like you how does it feel to be a colonizer?

Where would Mexicans flee to if it weren't for Texas? They'd still be stuck in Mexico.

The so called "immigrants" skirt the legal process.

"There was never a time where developing countries benefited from western international order" Ever hear of the Asian tigers? They are quite wealthy and they got wealthy though the west was supposed to be bullying them. China isn't looking too poor these days and that was done under the western international order. You guys always do the same thing... pity those poor Communist countries. By the way, the Chinese feel entitled to the Pacific ocean. They accidently released a map indicating the part of the ocean they should rule. The line went right up to a 50 mile limit at Hawaii.
