When I was at the Nissan dealer, I spent about 15% of my income on tools. My rule was if I had to borrow a tool from another tech once, I'd buy it so I wouldn't have to borrow it twice. We used to be able to write off our tool purchases as unreimbursed work expenses, so I didn't mind. Trump got rid of that for us. Now I only buy tools when I absolutely need one.
