I totally agree. The Prius is a little more engaging to drive, looks much better, but the price difference is a win for the Corolla hybrid, in a pure economic point of view.
7
For me Hybrid Limited is the choice.
4
@Cornbread-gi6kt yeah thanks. My last debt which was mortgage was already paid off at 50 last October :) Now working on plan to cash flowing kids’ college tuition in the near future……50 years on earth did go by fast. :)
3
@afcgeo882 yep, so does America’s Tire.
2
Yeah they should darken the finish,
2
The M340i is nice, but some of us do value reliability at 85% of that M’s performance. Long term ownership I would definitely take a Lexus. But you lease or trade in a car every 3 years, go with German cars.
2
@drivescene6747 sure, 5 years. Then after that either trade it in, lose 70% or budget some repair money every year. Either way, he or she is gonna to pay. There is reason why BMW or Audi lose so much value after 3-5 years, it doesn’t happen all of a sudden. Mercedes are a little better, but not much. Italian cars are even worse……
2
@drivescene6747 I am not saying those are bad cars and no one should ever owned them. When I was younger, I owned an e39 540i and a w211 e350. Both were great until something fails or leaks. It just gets old after a while and have owned Lexus ever since. GS350 F Sport, then my current driver a boring 17 ES350. None of these 2 give me any issues. In couple years and my next ride will be a LC500 or LC500H.
2
@drivescene6747 well I wouldn’t call a Lexus LC or IS500 boring, may not be as fun as a M3. But definitely not to far from the m340i. To me a fun car are M series, AMG or the RS series.
2
@drivescene6747 oh the ES350 for sure, as boring as it gets. It gets me to work and back, nothing more, nothing less. All I can say is it is reliable, reliable and reliable, cost nothing other than oil change, not one unexpected repair trip to the dealer over the 5 years I owned it. LC next after my kids goes to college in a couple years. A 911 is next on the bucket list.
2
@drivescene6747 I would be happy with a CS, GTS or GT3. Don’t need 4WD here in the Bay Area that’s for sure :)
2
The 90s Corolla was not a hybrid though and not even close to 50MPG.
2
Some of us do value reliability. I have had Bimmer, Mercedes and Audi and now a Lexus owner, I would never buy German again, well maybe except a Porsche 911 992 series,
2
Yeah, but if I care about gas price, I would even look at this. Just get a Tesla instead.
2
@Doc1855 for us too. Even the new Lexus RX is too big for my wife’s need. Bought her a NX350H instead. Nowadays $50-60k ain’t that much money.
2
Yeah, this car is for young family only. If I were single or empty nester, I would go RC F or LC500
2
andrewatm6369 $50K+ is a lot of money?
2
Nope. 7 only.
2
@FirstClass- maybe so in your opinion, which is irrelevant. Wrote a measly $52K check in April on my wife’s new NX hybrid. it is just money nothing more, nothing less.
2
Easy solution. Buy the GH too.
2
@Cornbread-gi6kt best wishes friend. :)
1
Porsche offers 25 different colors…..get a Porsche then.
1
@Cornbread-gi6kt yeah that AMG is a beast, my cousin had a GLS 63 AMG and it sounds mean at start up. Personally we are a longtime Lexus household and we don’t buy anything else, but i can say a Porsche 911 is definitely on the bucket list.
1
@Cornbread-gi6kt nice experience on the 911 Turbo. That’s a little too much money for my blood. A standard base model I will be satisfied. Yeah for me it will be a retirement gift if I could afford it at that time. SF Bay Area here so climate is ok all year around for a sports car. Just hit 50, maybe 5-10 more years to go.
1
@Cornbread-gi6kt sure I agree with you on living life and savor every moment of it. But base on my current liquid and net worth I just can’t see myself writing a $140-5K check on the dream Porsche yet. My personal rule of thumb and this is just me, when I buy a toy, it cannot exceeds 10% of my liquid at that moment in time. Which means at $150K my liquid should be at at least $1.5M, I am not there yet. I also have two teenagers whom I would like to help them down the road if I could. I have dreams but also practical and realistic. Anyway, if I were to retire at 55-60 I would definitely consider such purchase, as well as spending time traveling around the world. Best wishes.
1
@Cornbread-gi6kt good pointers again. Maybe as an engineer, I am more target and result oriented. So far I have reached my target of paid off our home and rentals by 50, my next target is get the kids through college in about 5-6 years, retire and do the things I always wanted like traveling, driving that Porsche down Pacific Coast hwy 1…………..
1
@Cornbread-gi6kt only $90K? Bought my wife a tiny Lexus NX350H at $51K . $90k is a bargain.
1
Buy both. type S for me and GH Plat for the wife😊
1
@jonkrispeterson6678 smart move. The GH Hybrid Limited is a nice SUV. Are you getting it at MSRP?
1
@jonkrispeterson6678 yep. MSRP is the norm now. We have bought 8 cars in my household and I always use invoice as the baseline. Just bought my wife a 2024 Lexus NX350H last month at MSRP. My first time ever paying MSRP, that was surreal. We also have a 08 RX350, still runs like a champ at 158K miles, going to my son as a hand me down. My 17 ES350 just hit 38K miles, bought it at $32K plus tax fees in 2017, dealer were begging people to buy. Now the table have turned I guess. You are right, oh well, you win some, you lose some.
1
@lexusrcf2441 better yet, upgrade to a LC500, may not as fun to drive as the F, but she sure looking stunning.
1
Wait a few years, used GH will be in the $40K range.
1
@AnontheGOAT exactly. It’s like buying a Ferrari and worry about the insurance cost. I am in the SF Bay Area and home are selling at average $1.4M in a ok neighborhood, those buyers are not worry about the property tax at $16K a year.
1
San Francisco Toyota is asking $2k markup on all GH across the board regardless of trim. Even Prius and Prius Prime are $2k markup, which I don’t think is outrageous compared to other dealers. Saw 2 Venza LE at $1k under MSRP.
1
@Doc1855 that’s good to hear. No I did not buy the GH or Prius. I bought my wife a 2024 Lexus NX350H in April at MSRP and no add ons, no forced financing since I paid cash in full. I refused to pay a penny over MSRP or add ons last year or so when the demand was hot, dealers were asking $3-5k. It was not a need. So I waited and waited until recently where most dealers are at MSRP. I guess inflation and high interest rate is doing it thing. BTW, hypothetically if I need a car now due to whatever reason, I do not mind paying $2k over MSRP on a Prius or P Prime. It will cost me more to fly over to Washington state, stay in a hotel for a couple of nights and the time to drive it back to the Bay Area. Now if I were retired?, I would definitely take that opportunity to go up north for a fun road trip. :)
1
It comes down to range. I offer my wife a new Tesla MYLR or a base Porsche Macan and she said no on both. bought her a 2024 Lexus NX350h and she loves it.
1
@johncipolletti5611 maybe so, not in my household though. The NX hybrid was $52k and I paid cash in full. My rule of thumb is if I can’t afford an object in cash triple its price (except a mortgage, which I don’t have since it is paid off), I can’t afford it. For me an average Japanese car can easily last 12-15 years, set aside a $300 a month, then I always have cash ready.
1
@johncipolletti5611 no doubt Bolts are nice at its price point. I have been looking for a more luxury variant like the Lucid Air Pure or Tesla MS to replace my 17 Lexus ES350. A 3YO MS with than 20k miles can be found at $52-4k. It is 90% new and saves at least $27k including tax.
1
@johncipolletti5611 very good points. Yes I know my priorities as a second gen immigrant who came to the US with absolutely nothing as a teenager. Yes, home and rentals all paid off in the SF Bay Area. Yes, education fully funded 529. 100% debt free. Upon Retirement we should be able to live off 401K, rental incomes and SS should i choose to withdraw as early as 62. Or I can choose to sell these properties worth ~$4-5M, move somewhere less expensive. Again, we don’t buy things we cannot afford triple its price in cash at that moment in time. What is the point of not enjoying the fruit when we worked, saved and invested over the last 30+ years? At the end of the day, we cannot take it with us.
1
I can definitely tell on my wife’s new Lexus NX350h when it switch from electric to engine. The Lexus is pretty quiet already.

1
@drivescene6747 yep, if she agrees, I would most like get a the 911 CS. GTS or GT3 maybe a little hardcore for long trips.
1
Cash all day every day.
1
@drivescene6747 Targa GTS, great choice. BTW, if I can talk my wife into a Taycan Cross Tourismo, that will be a perfect combo.
1
SF Toyota is marking up all Prius hybrid and Prius Prime at $2k. Wait may be 6-9 months though.
1
Well this channel is US and we in the US cannot get to buy BYD here.
1
@@ThrowAway-md9zx exactly. Mercedes will gladly sell you a AMG C43 all day everyday. Just bring money.
1
Test drove both. The Prius is now a little more stiff and engaging to drive than the Corolla Hybrid. The Corolla is easier to get in and out of though.
1
@jimdye7431 I personally would not buy the non hybrid Corolla. The CVT is not even close to the hybrid’s eCVT, which isn’t even a traditional CVT with chain and pulley. It is more planetary gear.
1
@ju4121 exactly my thought, unfortunately most people knows nothing about design, design engineering, manufacturing engineering and process. Anybody can design a car, but making it in large scale is a whole new ballgame.
