I think we need to realise the difference between an instinctive impulsive threat made on social media and a real legitimate threat on someone’s life.

@grief1 I tend to agree with you. And we shouldn’t forget that the people who propose such laws are never interested in a reciprocal relationship. When Nigel Farage and Katie Hopkins receive death threats, the left says they deserve it. Even the police do not act upon it. I saw BLM protestors last year in the streets chanting about how they would burn police officers and inciting violence. Do they get arrested for hate speech?

I’m generally reluctant to allow legislation to be introduced where it is not necessary or can be used against people expressing perfectly reasonable views. It seems to me a subjective distinction is hard to make. We may agree that it is right that this individual was arrested for making death threats, but the same legislation was used to send Count Dankula to jail for making a joke, so the law has its faults.

@grief1 the problem with many of these laws is they are so subjective. We may believe it should be a crime to use racist and abusive language but who decides what is racist and abusive? Kevin and Imran are lauding the law for arresting this person but we need to remember that the same law was also used to send Count Dankula to jail for making a joke. Again, who decides what is acceptable for everyone else to hear?
