The British Empire was the greatest net force for good the world has ever seen and quite possibly ever will see. What were other countries doing at the time of these things that are "...not to be proud of"? We are what we are today and there is no need to navel gaze to the distant past to offer mea culpa's to people who were not there. Did not suffer in any way, from that event. Who's own people were up to far, far worse at that time.
