When people don't make enough money to be active consumers anymore means you can't sustain employment in the longer term, increasing levels of debt, revenues for infrastructure and services decline, or hold on to or build savings and investment. It's a downward spiral that feeds itself. A recessions is an economy that can only afford subsistence. A depression means not even achieving subsistence. Ask ancient Rome how all those slaves worked out for the standard of living for ordinary Roman citizens who couldn't prosper. Same thing here. Not paying people enough for their 40+ hours of hunter/gatherer time or gouging prices that cause inflation cycles kills the standard of living, national reserve resources, and reverses growth.
