Mounk is a very bright and thoughtful man, but his comments here are stunningly ignorant of American history. The US has been absorbing extremely complex mixes of ethnic and religious groups since around the 1880s. Of course it took time, and various groups integrated faster than others, but long before the "diversity" fad, the US had been exceptional at integrating broadly diffuse populations, needing usually around 2 generations. The current problem with blacks is the problem of their family disintegration (not cause by poverty) and lack of a culture favorable to education. For hispanics, it has been the enormity of it all -- from 5% in 1970s to 28% currently, and mostly illegal.

@toyotaprius79 Of course. It took a few generations of suffering for everyone. That's my point. It was hardly confined to blacks.
