As a South Indian, I love the coverage of NE. I want to understand the region better. Curiosity for other regions, mutual respect and empathy is needed for all regions to integrate our country.

@patmclaughlin107 over time I have realised, no region of the country gets good coverage. How many people in South India would know the names of CMs of UT, HP or even RJ off the cuff? In any country, it is basically 6-7 cities that dominate the news cycle because there is a constraint on how much you can follow. In India's case, it used to be only Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi. The exclusion of Chennai is the reason for the cultural meme of "South is underrepresented". TN politics and society is very insular and they don't project influence even to the neighbouring states while the other three cities historically exercised regional influence. Chennai's loss is Bengaluru's gain. KA politics is going national with the BJP/Hindutva success in the state, Hijab controversy, Bengaluru floods and the response, IT success stories and people like Vikram Sampath significantly represented in the news cycle In 5-6 years this narrative is no longer going to be true.

@akhil999in few points to consider: 1. Economy of India is not as developed as the countries to which people aspire to migrate. People across the world have the option to migrate to the West and Australia. A significant number of elite who would have come to India go to these countries instead. 2. India does see aspirational migration from its neighbourhood, but it's the remittance worker instead of the elite. If the elite had migrated, then this is one of the main factors that would have seen an acceptance for the idea of integration. 3. The second component of the need for migration would be identity. The neighbourhood was created on the nation state model(genetics+culture+language) which creates a strong need to distinguish themselves from the Indian country. This is even seen in TN where they have constructed an identity separate from the mainland.

@akhil999in the last comment was the backdrop. Now to addressing what needs to happen for these countries to organically want to join India. 1. Breakdown of the nation state model to multipolar Civilisations. Which means we need to wait for the breaking of the UD hegemony which has already started. 2. India's economy should grow for 3-4 decades to the point it becomes a full time global player. This will cause elite migration. 3. People in those states will start asking the question, why only the elites get to play the game plus the dependence of the Indian network will result in the school of thought that they should integrate. We are seeing this with NE now. Their elite work in Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other major Indian cities. They bring back culture. One thing a friend of mine who is Bodo told me golgappa and biryani stalls are a big draw in his state. Now even the lower middle class is considering sending children to the southern states to get an education in engineering. They see the limitations if their state was a small country and started the process of considering their identity as a regional marker instead of a tribal one
