This guy is full of shit . There is no evidence for what he saying, he's guessing. His exact words: "by my best estimate". He's talking about an industry that was alive and well in the late 70s and early 80s but these coal-fire steel mills, like every coal-fire power plant in the last 20 years, will have to modernize and they will use natural gas because it's far cheaper than coal. Why do you think so many power plants in America have switched from coal to Natural Gas... they are saving hundreds of millions every year.

Curry Munch No, it's not the regulations. The difference between coal and natural gas is with natural gas delivery you need a series of pipes but with coal delivery you need minors and an army of people to transport that coal and store it on both ends. This is why so many power plants in the United States have switched from coal to Natural Gas since the 80s, they are saving hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

Samuel Adams It had nothing to do with regulations, that is a convenient excuse. Coal has been on the decline since the late 70s because it was cheaper for coal-fire plants to switch to Natural Gas. They save hundreds of millions of dollars every year just because they no longer have to mine, transport coal, and store it, that's all that matters to a corporation. They don't give a damn about regulations. These plants that he's talking about that will be coming back online, they have been dormant since the late 80s and early 90s, they will have to be modernized for safety reasons and they will switch over to natural gas because it saves the steel mills hundreds of millions of dollars.

Mr J That's great, but China sells cheaper cold than the US. The American coal industry is not coming back. Coal is a commodity, so, the more coal China produces it makes available for the worldwide Market the cheaper it will be.
1
Art Curious Coal is a [commodity] the more China produces the cheaper it gets on the worldwide Market. China, Mexico, and Brazil produce coal for pennies on the dollar already, so to cut the legs out from under the American coal producers China will simply over produce coal so it's at a price point where it's not profitable for American companies to sell it on the open market. The American coal industry is not coming back.
1
Art Curious You can disagree all you want but the hard fact is coal is a commodity that's traded on the open market. Commodities work on pure Keynesian economics. That means [supply and demand] that's how it's always worked. Trump applied tariffs to Chinese steel and aluminum so China will retaliate by flooding the coal market by overproducing coal, bringing the price point down to where American coal producers cannot compete. That is what a trade war is all about.
1
Art Curious If you have two competing coal producers, where China is selling coal below market value, because they can, and America selling coal at market value, no one in their right mind will buy American coal at two to three times the price they can buy it from China. The American coal industry is not coming back. Trump was right about one thing China is a market and currency manipulator this is what they do.
1
Art Curious Apparently you don't get it because I'm not talking about your so-called "pre-industrial levels", I'm talking about 10% to 20% higher than what it's currently processing now, that's not going to happen. The American coal industry will be the biggest casualty of a trade War with China. That is a guarantee. The American coal Industries basically done, it's not coming back.
1
Art Curious For a second time, coal is a commodity. China, Mexico, and Brazil already produce coal for pennies on the dollar. Economics 101, when supply for outweighs the demand the cheaper the commodity is. China will destroy the American coal industry because they seemingly have an unlimited number of workers that will work for a dollar a day. It's a guarantee China will retaliate by flooding the worldwide coal Market with their product. The American coal industry is done, stick a fork in it.
1
Art Curious It's humorous to read your comments because they're void of reality. China has vast coal reserves and they have a seemingly endless Workforce of workers that will work for less than a dollar a day. Coal is a commodity and with a commodity like coal price is King. American coal producers cannot get anyone to mine the coal for less than minimum wage. Last time I checked the Chinese dollar is only worth $0.06 compared to the American dollar. No matter how you want to argue this the American coal Industries done in the trade War with China. Show me how any American coal producer can compete with China, how can they make a profit?
1
Mr J Coal has been declining since the late 70s because American Coal Fired plants and Coal Fired power plant have been switching to natural gas because they save hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Coal is a commodity you can't magically will it to to be profitable when you have three other countries that out produces the United States because their Workforce will work for a dollar a day. This is simple economics you can't compete with someone who basically gives the product away.

Seriously, that's the best you can do? The facts aren't on your side. Ther American coal industry is done, It's not coming back.

It took me less than ten seconds to destroy your entire manifesto. Could you please post the source for your "opinion"?
1
Art Curious I seem to remember asking you to post a link instead of giving me your opinion.
1
Art Curious That's a lovely Manifesto, it's wrong but lovely. Why don't you give me a link to this article that you were referring to. Why is that so hard?
1
Art Curious It's obvious you have no idea how economic forces work or the impact they have on commodities. China, Brazil in Mexico virtually have workforces that will work for less than $1 a day, China in Mexico don't have the same safety regulations when it comes to mind or so if 10 people die per day they will just keep working there are no repercussions for them. I'll ask you for second time, how can an American coal mining firm compete with China, Mexico, and Brazil when they don't have the same Workforce nor the same profit margin as any of the three countries I just named. In a trade War it's impossible.
1
There is NO [if] about it. Coal is a dead industry. The United States is the largest producer of Natural Gas in the world and it's half the expense of coal.
1
The funny part of your comment is you have no idea what a commodity is.
