  11. I am a gen X single woman (born in 1975) and marriage was already in decline in Italy for my generation. Then they introduced "civil unions" for both straight and non straight couples. Most of the privileges of marriage, none of the divorce troubles. Marriage is just wrong. We do not need marriage.

  15.  @jmgonzales7701  well in Italy very few people are getting married. The trend started decades ago and it has been going down fast. At this rate, it will disappear fast. We are very different than Americans and other old fashioned countries. So in my country it is possible it will be abolished. Not tomorrow, obviously. But in a few decades. Most couples just live together with no strings. At most, they get into "civil unions", which are both for straight and gay couples. Divorce is a long and expensive process in Italy. Why should people choose marriage when a civil union is more convenient and divorce is not required? You just pack and go when the relationship ends. Or just live together. There is no reason to get married at all in Italy. No one cares if children have parents who are married or not either. All very normal here. Oh and only tourists get married in church in Italy 😂 Covid put the last nail into the marriage coffin. Married people could not stand spending so much time together at home because of covid corfew, so we had a boom of divorces. That pretty much killed any "romantic" idea of marriage and showed to real, ugly side. Marriage, like childbirth and religion, are on their deathbeds here.

It's in countries that used to be very patriarchial (and still are, in culture even if the laws have become more pro-woman in some cases): Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea etc. In these countries, wives and mothers are/were expected to do everything regarding childcare, housework etc. Since my generation (1975) we have said no, enough is enough. No marriage, no children. The men need to change, if they dont want Italy to disappear. Personally I am antinatalist, so I dont care if italians disappear. But some do care, and the solution is MORE feminism/equity. Like in France and in North Europe, were both parents are involved, not just mothers (and birthrates are definitely higher). To put all pressures on mothers is a big mistake and will not change low birthrates. The men doing half of childcare and housework might.

Marriage for many women (and, unfortunately, little girls too) is similar to slavery. Of course the Patriarchy would rather keep women slaves in marriage, that does not make marriages right or moral.

  23.  @PostMillMan  Evil is the pressure in some society (not mine, I am Italian) to get married and have children. That leads to unhappy marriages, depression, suicide, high use of antidepressants and benzos and other drugs. Have you ever read The Feminine Mistyque?

The mother on the other hand is trapped. Its so obvious, I feel sorry about mothers. I chose the fun way.

Most of them became alcoholic, they abused drugs like Valium (or amphetamines, to stay skinny like women magazines told them they should be). Many cheated on their husbands (and husbands did the same). Most were depressed and even suicidal. You should read it, everybody should, so that history will not repeat itself. Unless that is exactly your goal.

  27.  @PostMillMan  there are many studies from the 60s and womens use of Valium and such. Alcoholism was a big problem too. Come on, they even wrote rock songs about it 😂 the issue was more serious in the USA than Europe because in Europe we do not have those big, horrible, boring suburbs. But womens unhappiness after WWII was felt in all countries involved in the war. The ladies had worked very hard during the war, but were put aside once more when the men came back home. You can not deny something that happened all around the world.

I am 49, I am pretty happy with most of my life choices, the one I am most happy about is never getting married and being childfree. All my single, childfree friends agree. All parents regret having children, especially mothers. Mothers are lied to about motherhood. When they find out the truth, its too late. We have to keep telling women the ugly truth about marriage, pregnancy, childbirth etc.

We never had the idea that children were only the mothers responsability. It was also the father, the grandparents, the uncles, aunts, cousins, even family friends. The American model of nuclear family is all wrong.

  46.  @rapper4orty2  how old are you? 12? Women kept the economy alive during WWI and WWII both in the USA and Europe, often doing a better job than men. Every single society got wealthier, with better standards of living for women, children and even men THANKS to feminism. Even today, the poorest countries, like the ones in Africa, the Middle East or Asia, are poor also because they do not use half of their population (WOMEN). Once a country has educated women in schools and the workplaces, economy and living standards improve alot. So, its either live in poverty with many children who will get sick, stave, and die young, or get your country out of absolute poverty and ignorance with the help of women, but have fewer children. It is really a no brainer.

They were depressed because they were forced out of the public sphere (jobs, politics) into the ugly, boring suburbs to be wives and mothers. They did not really have other choices. So most turned to alcohol, drugs, affairs... It was a social disaster, but it caused second wave feminism, which saved future generations from that horror. Too bad we still need several waves of feminism to fix everything, we are not even close, but second wave was very important.

Italian old people are way healthier than Americans, and also have help from social services, like any decent country. Children should not look after old, sick parents. It is not their jobs. We have nurses for that.

The government helps children, mothers, poor people, unemployed people etc. No woman needs a husband for that. We are not backwards like the USA. In Northern Europe the welfare state is even more generous. It's the STATE than has a responsability to help people in need here.
