@catherines7553 not like the EU. On many things, like the environment, digital rights, food rules etc, the EU sets the standards. It is called "the Bruxelles effect".

@EMB3D I agree. There should be an option to kick out from the EU non democratic countries or countries that act against the EU itself. Hungary does not belong in the EU unless they change.

@Hun55 do you know how the EU works or do you need a lesson? You vote for the European parliament members and for your country's head of government/ State. They decide who is going to be in the Commission. So, yeah, we do vote for them.

@maxalex3661 I assure you that in Italy there is not talk of "evil Russia". Not on the Left and not on the Right. My father loves Russia and has been to Moscow in 1980. The only country that has always been russophobic is the USA. Have a nice day.

@maxalex3661 I am glad your relative has a good experience in Italy. I am not surprised she found an Italian boyfriend. Many Italian men marry Russian women. Our cultures have alot in common I think. I hope our countries go back to friendly relationships like before this stupid war. Meloni needs to go.

@JohnWick-d1b2b I find it insulting that in the USA and other countries they don't teach that Russians played a huge part in defeating Germany and liberating other European countries. A Russian soldier who joined the Italian Resistance was killed by Germans a kilometer from were I live. We remember who was on our side. Americans forget that, and think they were the big heroes in WWII 😞

@ValerieDee123 mess? What mess? I don't want to spend money on weapons. I prefer to keep my universal healthcare, thank you very much. The EU should have never gotten involved in Ukraine with weapons, only with diplomacy. Ukraine is not a EU member and not a Nato member. We used to get cheap Russian gas and now we don't. The USA is our biggest enemy, especially now.

@steveblobs4851 well banning criticism of ANY religion is a bit too much even for me. I noticed the UK is a bit heavy on the censorship lately. I approve regulating misinformation and hate speech. I guess it's difficult to decide where to stop.

In Europe, free speech doesn NOT include hate speech and misinformation. Stop pushing so-called "American values" to the rest of the world. I am so glad China will replace you.

@midlspahe no, you are wrong or lying. We can tell what misinformation is, because there is an objective, scientific truth for most things. And there isn't for others. Like, religion has no scientific truth. Anti-racism and feminism (what you call "woke ideology", right?) have foundation in SCIENCE. We can not compare science to magical thinking. Beliefs based on magic thinking should be routered out like a cancer.

@Skitdora2010 there is no freedom without economic freedom. Working class Americans do not have any freedom. Of course neither does the European working class, but at least we dont die or go bankrupt because we can not afford healthcare, we are less likely to end up homeless, more likely to have free or cheap education etc. We need to ditch capitalism and maybe we have a chance to survive.

@midlspahe my parents spent their honey moon in Yugoslavia. They loved it. My father is a communist, he liked the Yugoslavia system more than the Soviet system. I am a democratic socialist. I think a mixed economy is the best choice. Not this neoliberal bs. I also think the Left made a mistake to focus more on identity politics than on socialist programs. They abandoned the working class. No surprise they are voting for the far-right now in many countries. But when people can vote for a socialist Left, they do. Bernie Sanders is very popular in the USA for example. In Italy, most young people (the unemployed, students etc) voted for Left parties last elections.

@midlspahe there is no "woke ideology" btw. Being what people call "woke" is not an "ideology". It literally means "being aware (=awake) of bias in the system" against POC, women, LGBT+ people. It comes from black Americans. We really should not use it in Europe. It has nothing to do with us.

@midlspahe it is also not "new". My parents in the 60s fought many battles against sexism, racism, homophobia etc. So did I, and I am 50. You just call "woke ideology" what people just call civil rights. Civil rights battles are nothing new.

@midlspahe yes, I am an atheist. I do not believe in anything supernatural. The "truth" is the material world. Anything I experience with my senses. I do not experience anything "supernatural" or "spiritual". That is not how MY brain works. I actually think atheists and religious or spiritual people have different brains. It is impossible for my brain to believe differently. I was born an atheist and a skeptical.

@karinadiana901 we have separation of powers in every democratic country. But we have different systems. In Italy we do not vote for the president directly, the parliament does. And we do not vote for the PM directly either, although Meloni really wants to change that. In Italy the parliament has more power I guess. Good for me.

@JohnWick-d1b2b hating on anyone is a very bad basis for national identity. Do we want Europe to become the new Middle East?? I am glad Italian identity is not linked to any hate of other peoples. We have a very long history and rich culture, we don't need hate. Ask any Italian who their "enemy" is. Most would reply no one.

@JohnWick-d1b2b yes, I was aware of the strong classism in British society. People in counsil housing and on benefits are considered "parasites". There's a whole subculture of the working classes in the UK. In Italy it is not so extreme. Maybe because we kicked our last king out of Italy after WWII, and our Constitution formally abolished all aristocratic titles. So we don't have an official class of dukes, princes, etc. My ancestors made the right decision 😉

@davemeyrick7115 of course not. They need weapons for self-defense. There are many Italians in the UN peace-keeping mission in Lebanon. They were attacked by the IDF, but still kept nutreal. They are there to help civilians and as a deterent for both sides. Obviously it didnt stop the IDF, because they don't respect any international law 😞

@Exequor1 I disagree. In Italy we have avoided turning into Hungary 2,0 also thanks to the EU. The EU protects us Europeans from everything, from food safety to digital data privacy to the Green Deal etc. Without the EU, we are nothing. Not happening.
