If you ask random people outside of Japan, more than half of them probably have no interest in anime or have only seen popular anime like "attack on titan" or "one piece". And basically all anime that are popular overseas are already popular in Japan. There were people on reddit and twitter who claimed that "Attack on Titan" was an anime that became popular in the West and not in Japan, but "Attack on Titan" was already popular in Japan before it became popular in the West. The reason why the first season of the anime was made was because the manga "Attack on Titan" had already sold more than 1 million copies in Japan.
