  1. It really depends on the region. Tokyo is definitely expensive, but other cities in Japan are not so expensive. Even Osaka the 2nd biggest city in Japan is much cheaper than Tokyo. For example, when I lived in Osaka, the average rent in Osaka was $500 a month, and food cost about $250 for three meals a day. So, on average, Japan is not as expensive as the USA or Europe. I've lived in California, New York and Sydney in Australia, and the cost of living in those places was roughly three times more expensive than in Osaka.
