⚽️ Hosting the football World Cup in Qatar is a bit like hosting the World Surfing Championships in Switzerland or the World Mountaineering Championships in Holland. To paraphrase Dr Johnson: “Sir, hosting the World Cup in Qatar is like a dog walking on its hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all.” 🐕

While there is more than the smack of ‘whataboutery’ here, he does have a point. If we look at the historical records of every single host nation in terms of past behaviour, out of Uruguay, Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, England, Germany, Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Italy, USA, France, South Korea, Japan, South Africa, Brazil, Russia, Qatar, I’d only really give a pass to Switzerland, Sweden and South Korea. The rest have terrible national historical crimes to atone for, including horrendous human rights violations, whether committed on others, or committed on their own people. In terms of Qatar, they quite obviously fall into this ignominious record, but because we have rolling news 24/7/365 and everyone is obliged to have an opinion on everything it seems, it feels like they are being picked on in a more than hypocritical manner by the West.

In 1966, the year England hosted the World Cup, Britain was just emerging from 350 years of Empire, in which it undemocratically subjugated, enslaved, murdered, plundered for its own benefit. Moreover, in England itself that year, homosexuality was illegal. To be fair though, you could easily get a pint! 🍻

@jessez8503 It was a joke. You have clearly had the ‘sense of humour bypass’ operation. I was essentially saying this: Qatar, a country with 0 footballing tradition, and with 1 stadium when it was awarded the World Cup, has been chosen to host the World Cup. Can you guess why? I bet you can. If you can’t, let me help you: 💰 💰 💰

@joso7228 I agree. Infantino was just pointing out the egregious double-standards hypocrisy at work here. I’m no fan of FIFA, but he’s right on this one.

@troublej1035 I would also add that in very recent history to when Germany first hosted it, Germany had been the instigator of the most horrendous human slaughter in human history. Just a thought.

@troublej1035 Did you not see my reply to that? Argentina was. England was. Just to take 2 examples. In 1966, homosexuality was illegal in England. Now I’m not sure what moral universe you live in, but I’d say that was a grave abuse of the human rights of gay people.

@troublej1035 Not defending them at all. You have no clue have you? I abhor Qatar’s regime. But it’s no more abhorrent than all the previous hosts have been, excepting perhaps Sweden, South Korea and Switzerland. You seem to appear to think the world is light-years more advanced than 1966 or 1978. It’s not. Arguably, we’ve moved an inch forward, but great swathes of this planet are still morally benighted, living under horrendous regimes. Infantino is simply pointing out that the West has been operating ‘horrendous regimes’ (mostly on others) since about 1492. He’s right to point this out. None of this excuses Qatar. Obviously they got the World Cup because some palms were greased but that is a whole other debate.

@troublej1035 You make the grave categorical error that pointing out others’ bad ways in the past is defending Qatar today. It’s not. I abjure it all vehemently.
