‘Could’ win war? Haven’t they already? Putin fails to take Kiev. Putin is failing to take Donbas. At least a third of his demoralised, unmotivated, badly equipped conventional forces are destroyed. Putin has singularly failed to read the majority of the Ukrainian people, with his pre-war arrogant hubris that he could simply roll a few rusty tanks over the border and topple a sovereign, self-governing nation like he was pushing over a wobbly tower of dominoes. Fool. He’s dying anyway, it seems. This fact is largely behind his reckless endeavours, and he chose to gamble at a last hurrah in the murky world of aggressive geopolitics. His fatal miscalculation was that about 20% (if that) of the ethnic Russian Ukrainians would see him through. It won’t. The critical mass ain’t there. Once he pops his clogs, Russia needs to elect someone who isn’t going to be so foolishly inept as to believe you can pitch up to your next-door neighbour, and attempt to take that neighbour’s home by force.
