As a centrist liberal I’m constantly mystified at how polarising this issue is. Reading the comments here, it seems you’re either pro-open borders or no immigrants whatsoever. How about the basic idea that the first duty of any government in a democratic country is to protect and safeguard the lives of its citizens. Take this to the city/town level: if I knew my hometown was being flooded by illegal immigrants (yesterday, it was widely reported that 1 in 12 people living in London are illegal immigrants) I would want my government to get a strong grip on that situation. Nothing racist about this. I’m pro-immigration. But pro legal, controlled immigration.

In 2022, around 13,000 African migrants were recorded at the US-Mexico border, according to US Customs and Border protection data. By 2023, this figure had quadrupled to 58,000.

@mikekane2492 I agree with that. However, the other issue I can think of with similar polarisation of views is anything to do with LGBT+. 👍

@ Huh? “Those I support”? What does that mean? I support strictly controlled legal immigration. That’s what I ‘support’. I ‘control’ my house. Strictly controlled legal immigration is my government ‘controlling’ who comes into my country.

@papasquat355 open society : a society that allows its members considerable freedom (as in a democracy) Going by the above definition, I’m pro-open societies. I’m just not pro-not controlling a country’s borders. Otherwise, what are borders for? 🤷♂️ I control whom I allow into my house. My government should be doing this with my country.

@peterwilson7532 Sorry? Lol. Wtf are you on about? There are no more homosexuals now than there were 10, 100, 500, 1,000, 10,000 years ago! 😂

@papasquat3551) I’m not American. 2) I deeply distrust the left and the right the further these 2 lean to their respective sides. 3) It’s complicated. I look at each issue individually. I suppose, on immigration, some might say I’m more ‘right’ than ‘left’ but on other issues (e.g. gay rights), some might say I’m more ‘left’. In other words, I never fully understand how individuals buy into a whole manifesto of one side or the other. Things are way too complicated for that simplicity.

@1inchPunchBowl Really? I detect a lot of folk making comments which strongly suggest they have no real issue with hundreds of people illegally pouring into a country unchecked. There are an estimated half million illegal entries into the United States each year. Surely, any US administration (Republican or Democrat) should be on this. I regard Trump, generally, as an idiot, but am 100% for each country having safe, secure borders.

@bobbyjj5372 That was half my point. The ones on the right who clearly have an underlying xenophobic/racist agenda. However, there are millions, like me, fairly central liberals, who can clearly see that having undocumented millions pouring into a country unchecked is an unsustainable situation in the long-run.

@keithlillis7962 Toleration is fine. To a point. When you import over 1% of your population in a single year (as the UK has done for the past few years - along with all the Channel illegals) then, for me, that’s unsustainable for harmonious integration. And that’s even before mentioning the burden on our already creaking services. As I said, I’m not anti-immigration, but a country as already densely packed as the UK should not, imo, be importing over 1% of its population year on year. It should be more like 0.1%. The general point, however, is that a government that appears to not have a proper handle on its immigration numbers (and unable to secure its borders) looks like a very weak government not doing its job properly.

Indeed. Notice the colour of the skin of both sets of ‘criminals’.
