Amazed BBC has left comments on for this one. I live in Edinburgh and have followed this case from the beginning and as far as I can tell a large part of the motivation for this was, yes, jealousy, but also the honour-based codes of Islam, which can so easily be used and abused to feed and justify one man’s need to control. I’m not specifically having a go at Islam here as I’m agnostic and mistrust all organised religion, but Hitchens had it right when he said quite simply: “religion poisons everything”.

@abcdefghijk1024 Really? That’ll be why the very mother of the victim, who is a Muslim herself, believes a large part of the reason for this act was “honour based”.

@abcdefghijk1024 Just for the record, I refuse to take seriously any religion, any religion that states the following: Surah 3:151: We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve (all non-Muslims) … Surah 2:191: And kill them (non-Muslims) wherever you find them … kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers (non-Muslims). Surah 9:5: Then kill the disbelievers (non-Muslims) wherever you find them, capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush … You believe in a barbaric primitive text from the Dark Ages written by men. Also, why does it not surprise me that someone who believes this astonishingly nasty and poisonous manmade bull-crap is also an upholder of the death penalty. Oh yeah, and one other thing which I personally don’t think is highlighted enough about your oh so holy Islam: good old Mohammed’s future wife, Aisha, was just six years old when she was betrothed to ole Mo, himself in his 50s, and only nine when the marriage was consummated. Now I don’t know about you but in my world that makes your “prophet” a paedophile. Lovely role model stuff there for us all to follow.👍

@IFAMILYIH I have one simple question: why do you need a manmade textbook from thousands of years ago to teach you how to treat a woman? Also you’re in denial about how if women don’t toe the line sexually in Islam, then there can be deadly serious consequences: In a poll with respondents across countries in the Arab world such as Algeria (27%), Morocco (25%), Sudan (14%), Jordan (21%), Tunisia (8%), Lebanon (8%), and the Palestinian territory of the West Bank (8%) - all Muslim countries - it was found that honor killings were more acceptable than homosexuality. Oh, and since I mention it, what have you nutters got against gays anyway? I swear that try as I might I still cannot get anyone to provide me a remotely rational reason as to why I should hate homosexuality.

@Nalam-dk8qg Theology and specifically organised religion has been to blame for a huge proportion of humanity’s problems since time immemorial. Read a few history books. Hell, even your tribe is split into 2 branches (Sunni/Shiite) and you murder each other in your thousands over an unverified, unverifiable daddy in the sky.
